About Kenai Lake

Kenai Lake sits in the Kenai Mountains on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula, fed primarily by glacial meltwater carried in by the Snow River and Trail River. Rock flour suspended in that meltwater gives the water its turquoise color through summer. The lake drains west at Cooper Landing into the Kenai River, which continues on to Skilak Lake and eventually Cook Inlet. Moose Pass sits along its eastern shore, and Seward lies roughly 30 miles to the south by road.

The Alaska Railroad runs along the lake's northern shore on its route between Seward and Anchorage, and the Sterling Highway roughly parallels the southern side. Cooper Landing, at the lake's outlet, serves as a base for sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai River and float trips through the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. Moose Pass hosts a summer stop on the Alaska Railroad and a small year-round population. Boaters on Kenai Lake contend with sudden wind funneling down the surrounding mountain valleys, which has led to occasional search-and-rescue calls.

Why we cut this one
Kenai Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Kenai Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Kenai Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 46 ft, 93 ft, 139 ft, 185 ft, 232 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 278 ft. The lake covers about 22.4 square miles, and 83 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Kenai Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Kenai Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Kenai Lake.

Questions

Kenai Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Kenai Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Kenai Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
