About Big Sand Lake
Big Sand Lake sits among the many solution lakes of central Florida's karst terrain, formed as underlying limestone dissolved and the surface sediment settled into the resulting basins. At roughly 432 acres with about four miles of shoreline, it holds a modeled maximum depth near 33 feet, shallow compared to the region's larger spring-fed lakes but typical for the smaller basins scattered through the Orlando area. Its rounded outline reflects the sinkhole origin common to central Florida lakes.
Big Sand Lake sits a few miles from Orlando's International Drive tourist corridor, ringed largely by single-family homes, gated communities, and hotel properties that filled in as the theme park district expanded outward from the 1970s on. Residents use it for fishing, kayaking, and small boat traffic rather than commercial recreation, making it a residential counterpoint to the resorts nearby. Its closeness to Universal Orlando and the convention district makes it one of the more urbanized lakes in the region.
