About Blue Cypress Lake
Blue Cypress Lake sits in Indian River County, Florida, near the town of Fellsmere, and forms the headwaters of the St. Johns River, which flows north for roughly 310 miles before reaching the Atlantic near Jacksonville. The lake is ringed by stands of bald cypress, some rising from the water on wide buttressed trunks with root knees breaking the surface. Local guides and biologists have pointed to individual cypress trees along the shoreline with estimated ages in the hundreds of years, among the oldest trees documented in the eastern United States.
The lake draws bass anglers who fish its stumps and cypress edges, and it hosts organized bass tournaments through the year. Airboat operators run tours out of small landings on the shoreline, since much of the lake is shallow and marshy rather than lined with docks or waterfront homes. Fellsmere and the surrounding county remain largely agricultural, known for citrus groves and cattle range rather than lake development, and Blue Cypress has stayed comparatively undeveloped compared with lakes closer to Florida's coastal cities.
