About Lake Ariana
Lake Ariana sits in Polk County, Florida, a few miles northwest of Winter Haven near the town of Auburndale. Like most lakes in this part of the state, it formed as a sinkhole where limestone bedrock dissolved and the surface collapsed, rather than through glacial carving. The lake covers about 974 acres with roughly five miles of shoreline and reaches a modeled depth of about 53 feet. Polk County's economy grew up around citrus groves and phosphate mining, and lakes like Ariana became the residential backyards of that growth.
The lake is ringed mostly by single-family homes and a public boat ramp, drawing anglers after largemouth bass, a species central Florida lakes are known for statewide. Winter Haven itself built a tourism identity around water, home to the Chain of Lakes and, starting in 1936, Cypress Gardens, one of Florida's first theme parks and a birthplace of competitive water skiing. Lake Ariana isn't part of that connected chain, but it sits in the same limestone basin country, a few minutes' drive from the lakes that made the area famous.
