About Lake Clinch
Lake Clinch sits in Polk County on Florida's Lake Wales Ridge, a band of old dune terrain where rainwater dissolving the limestone below has left the land pocked with sinkhole lakes. Modeled at about 33 feet at its deepest, the lake covers roughly 1,171 acres and carries close to five miles of shoreline, giving it a rounder outline than many of the elongated solution lakes nearby. Citrus groves once ran down close to the water on the ridge's low hills, and packing houses in the surrounding small towns built the local economy for much of the 20th century.
The lake today is bordered mostly by houses and grove land rather than commercial development, and it draws the kind of traffic typical of Polk County's smaller lakes: bass anglers working the shoreline early, a handful of fish camps and boat ramps, and residents who've owned lakefront lots for decades. It isn't part of a chain and has no lock system connecting it to neighboring lakes, so boat traffic stays local. Winter Haven, with its own chain of lakes, lies to the north and anchors the region's fishing and tourism economy.
