About Lake Davenport
Lake Davenport sits in Polk County, Florida, in the sandy ridge country south of Interstate 4, part of a landscape shaped by sinkholes that formed as slightly acidic groundwater dissolved the limestone below. Lakes across this part of central Florida, Davenport included, are mostly the product of that slow dissolution rather than glaciers or dams, which gives many of them a rounded, basin-like shape and no inlet or outlet stream.
The lake lies near the town of Davenport, a former citrus and cattle stop along the old Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, and about fifteen miles from Walt Disney World. Its shoreline today mixes older Florida homesteads with newer subdivisions built for the vacation-rental market that grew up around the Orlando attractions corridor. Local anglers fish it for largemouth bass, a common draw on the small, spring-fed lakes that dot this stretch of Polk County.
