About Lake Garfield
Lake Garfield lies in Polk County, Florida, a few miles from Winter Haven, in a region where lakes formed through the slow collapse of limestone bedrock rather than glacial scouring. The area sits on the Lake Wales Ridge, a strip of higher, sandier ground that drew citrus growers in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Winter Haven itself grew up around its cluster of interconnected lakes, becoming known through the 20th century for bass fishing and water-ski shows at Cypress Gardens, which opened in 1936 a short drive from Lake Garfield.
At about 497 acres with roughly four miles of shoreline, Lake Garfield is smaller than the major lakes in the Winter Haven chain and holds a maximum depth near 19 feet, shallow by the standards of the region's deeper sinkhole lakes. It draws largemouth bass anglers and lakefront residents rather than the pontoon and ski-boat traffic of the bigger connected lakes nearby. Houses and former citrus groves share its shoreline, a pattern common across Polk County as agricultural land gave way to residential lots between Winter Haven and Lakeland.
