About Lake Hancock
Lake Hancock sits in Polk County, Florida, just southeast of Lakeland and north of Bartow. It marks the headwaters of the Peace River, draining out through Saddle Creek before joining the river proper on its run south to Charlotte Harbor. The surrounding land carries a long history of phosphate mining, and the lake's basin and inflows have been shaped by that industry for decades. Winter Haven sits a short drive to the east.
In the 2000s and into the 2010s, Polk County and the Southwest Florida Water Management District built a water control structure at the lake's outlet, completed around 2012, to hold water levels higher and improve water quality before it reaches the Peace River downstream. The lake has long drawn largemouth bass anglers and hosts local fishing tournaments. It remains a working, managed waterbody more than a resort lake, tied closely to the region's water supply and mining history.
