About Lake Hatchineha
Lake Hatchineha sits in the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, a natural waterway in central Florida straddling the Polk-Osceola county line south of Haines City. It connects north to Cypress Lake and Lake Tohopekaliga and south to Lake Kissimmee through canals fitted with water-control structures, part of a system developed for navigation and flood control in the region. The lake covers roughly 5,365 acres with about 25 miles of shoreline, a broad, shallow basin typical of the chain. A small unincorporated community on its north shore carries the same name.
The chain has long drawn largemouth bass anglers, and Hatchineha is a regular stop for tournament boats working its grass lines and open flats. Airboats and bass boats share the water with duck hunters in season, launching from public ramps on the lake and its connecting canals. Its name derives from a Native American word tied to the region's Seminole and earlier Muscogee history. Kissimmee and Haines City are the nearest towns of any size, and most traffic on the lake comes from local anglers rather than passing tourists.
