About Lake Hollingsworth
Lake Hollingsworth sits in Polk County, Florida, near Winter Haven, covering about 341 acres inside a shoreline just under three miles around. A paved path, the Lake-to-Lake Trail, runs the full loop and is used daily by walkers, runners, and cyclists. J.L. Francis opened a swimming beach and dance pavilion on the south shore in 1915, drawing crowds for weekend dances, and by the 1920s houses were filling in the surrounding blocks.
Florida Southern College occupies the north shore, where architect Frank Lloyd Wright designed a cluster of campus buildings starting with the Annie Pfeiffer Chapel, finished in 1941. A 1947 plan for a Wright-designed lakefront amphitheater stalled when the state asserted ownership of the shoreline, and the site sat undeveloped for decades until the city and the college built a wetland and recreation area there, completed in 2004 and named Southern Landing.
