About Lake June in Winter
Lake June-in-Winter sits in Highlands County, Florida, on the Lake Wales Ridge, a strip of ancient dune sand that runs down the center of the peninsula and separates drainage toward the Atlantic from drainage toward the Gulf. The lake covers about 3,593 acres and holds roughly 13 miles of shoreline, with a modeled maximum depth near 57 feet — deep for a Florida lake, most of which run shallow. It sits next to the town of Lake Placid, itself renamed in 1927 from Lake Stearns after developer Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, wintered there and promoted the comparison to Lake Placid, New York.
Lake June-in-Winter is one of several named lakes in the ridge-lake chain that spans Highlands County, near the towns of Lake Placid and Sebring. Sport anglers fish it for largemouth bass, and its size — nearly six square miles of open water — sets it apart from the smaller sinkhole lakes nearby. Highlands County has drawn seasonal northern visitors since the 1920s land-boom era, when citrus groves and winter cottages first went up around the shoreline. Homes now ring most of the lake, a mix of older grove-adjacent parcels and newer waterfront construction.
