About Lake Mangonia

Lake Mangonia sits inside West Palm Beach, Florida, part of a chain of shallow lakes that includes Clear Lake and Lake Osborne. In the early 20th century the city linked these lakes by canal to Grassy Waters Preserve, the sawgrass marsh west of town, drawing water south through Lake Mangonia and Clear Lake toward the municipal treatment plant. Later water-treatment upgrades reduced the city's dependence on that route, but the canal connections remain in place today. The lake covers roughly 521 acres with about four miles of shoreline, ringed by residential streets, Australian Avenue, and the West Palm Beach municipal golf course.

Anglers fish Lake Mangonia for largemouth bass and panfish, launching from a public ramp off Australian Avenue rather than from private docks, since most of the shoreline is built up with houses and apartments instead of marinas. The lake sits close to Palm Beach International Airport, in a section of the city that filled in with residential neighborhoods as West Palm Beach expanded west from downtown through the mid-20th century. Models put its maximum depth at about 41 feet, deep for a lake its size in flat Palm Beach County, though most of the basin runs shallower than that.

Why we cut this one
Lake Mangonia is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Mangonia depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Mangonia depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 7 ft, 14 ft, 20 ft, 27 ft, 34 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 41 ft. The lake covers about 0.9 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Mangonia map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Mangonia for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Mangonia.

Questions

Lake Mangonia map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Mangonia; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Mangonia is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
