About Lake Mariana
Lake Mariana sits in the rolling sandhill and lake country of central Florida, a landscape shaped by limestone bedrock that dissolves slowly underground and lets the surface settle into basins. Over thousands of years those depressions filled with rainfall and groundwater, producing the region's dense scatter of round, spring-fed lakes. Polk County holds hundreds of them, Lake Mariana among the smaller named bodies southwest of Winter Haven, its basin sandy-bottomed and shallow enough for sunlight to reach the floor across most of its 482 acres.
The area around Winter Haven built its economy on citrus groves through much of the 1900s, with packing houses and grove roads laid out between the lakes long before subdivisions arrived. Bass fishing became the lake's steadiest draw, part of a Polk County reputation for largemouth bass that still pulls anglers from out of state. Homes and docks now line most of Lake Mariana's roughly four miles of shoreline, a mix of longtime Florida families and newer arrivals drawn by the same flat water and easy boat access that made the chain of area lakes popular decades earlier.
