About Lake Miccosukee
Lake Miccosukee sits in the karst hill country of Jefferson County, Florida, a short drive east of Tallahassee. The lake takes its name from the Mikasuki-speaking Native Americans who lived along its shores, part of the broader Miccosukee and Seminole presence in this stretch of the Florida panhandle. A Mikasuki town once stood near the lake, one of several settlements in the area during the early 1800s, before conflict with the United States reshaped the region.
In 1818, during the First Seminole War, forces under Andrew Jackson moved through the area and destroyed the Mikasuki town near the lake, an episode tied to the broader Jackson campaign that pushed into Spanish Florida that year. The lake itself sits in a sinkhole-riddled limestone basin typical of the region, the same geology that lets nearby Lake Jackson drain and refill over time. Today the lake is bordered by farmland and pine woods, with the small community of Miccosukee on its western edge.
