About Lake Pierce
Lake Pierce sits in Polk County, Florida, a few miles southeast of Winter Haven, in the sandy ridge country that runs through the center of the state. Like most lakes in this region it began as a sinkhole in the underlying limestone, not as a glacial basin or a dammed river valley. The lake covers roughly 3,457 acres and reaches a maximum depth near 56 feet, with about 13 miles of shoreline circling it, a mix of open shore and residential docks.
Winter Haven and the smaller Polk County towns around it grew up on citrus in the early 1900s, and lakes in the area served that agricultural economy before they served recreation. Central Florida's lake country, this one included, is well known among bass anglers, and Polk County hosts regular tournament traffic on its lakes. Homes and docks line stretches of Lake Pierce's shore today, with the boat mix typical of the region: bass boats, pontoons, and water skiers.
