About Lake Poinsett
Lake Poinsett sits along the upper St. Johns River in Brevard County, north of Titusville, formed as part of the river's natural floodplain rather than by a dam. The St. Johns is unusual among major U.S. rivers for flowing north, and Poinsett is one of a chain of lakes and marshes the river widens into as it moves toward Jacksonville. The surrounding land stayed marsh and cattle pasture for much of the 20th century, kept largely undeveloped compared to Florida's coastal lakes.
The lake is known locally for bass fishing, drawing anglers from the Titusville and Cocoa area who fish it from small boats launched at a handful of informal ramps rather than resort marinas. Its water stays shallow and often turbid, with grass beds and open flats standing in for a defined basin. Shoreline development is sparse, and much of the surrounding acreage remains in conservation or agricultural use, which keeps the lake closer to river marsh than a typical recreational lake.
