About Lake Speer

Lake Speer sits in the lake district southwest of Orlando, one of hundreds of basins pressed into central Florida's limestone terrain. Lakes here form differently than in the glaciated North: rainwater works through porous rock over centuries, dissolving cavities that slowly collapse and fill, leaving round or oblong basins scattered across the ridge. Speer's roughly 220 acres and two miles of shoreline put it in the mid-size range for the region, big enough for a boat but small enough to know every cove by name.

The lake's water comes largely from rainfall and groundwater rather than a single river, typical of Florida's sinkhole lakes, and its shoreline has filled in with the mix of retirement homes, fishing docks, and citrus-adjacent lots common to Orange County's lake communities. At a modeled 41 feet, Speer runs deeper than the shallow marsh lakes nearby, holding cooler water below the surface that keeps largemouth bass and panfish active through the hot months. It draws the kind of quiet, local use — early-morning anglers, a few pontoon boats, kids off a dock — that never made it a landmark beyond its own zip code.

Why we cut this one
Lake Speer is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Speer depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Speer depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 7 ft, 14 ft, 20 ft, 27 ft, 34 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 41 ft. The lake covers about 0.4 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Speer map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Speer for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Speer.

Questions

Lake Speer map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Speer; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Speer is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
