About Lake Weir

Lake Weir sits in Marion County, Florida, a few miles southeast of Ocala. It formed as a sinkhole lake in the region's limestone karst, with no dam or river feeding it. The shoreline runs about 16 miles, split among the small communities of Weirsdale, Oklawaha, and Candler. In the late 1800s the lake became a steamboat stop and citrus-shipping point, with hotels drawing winter visitors from the north. Today the shore holds a mix of fish camps, retirees, and families who've kept small cottages for generations.

On January 16, 1935, FBI agents surrounded a rented lakefront cottage in Oklawaha and killed Ma Barker and her son Fred after a prolonged gun battle, ending the Barker-Karpis gang's run. The shootout drew national newspaper coverage and remains the community's best-known historical event. The lake later became a center for water skiing, with clubs staging competitive shows on its calm, nearly circular basin. Anglers fish it for largemouth bass and speckled perch, and small fish camps still line stretches of the 16-mile shore.

Why we cut this one
Lake Weir is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lake Weir depth chart, in wood

This is a Lake Weir depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 15 ft, 31 ft, 46 ft, 61 ft, 77 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 92 ft. The lake covers about 8.6 square miles, and 274 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lake Weir map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lake Weir for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lake Weir.

Questions

Lake Weir map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lake Weir; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lake Weir is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
