About Lake Whippoorwill
Lake Whippoorwill sits in Orange County, Florida, southeast of downtown Orlando near the Lake Nona area and Orlando International Airport. Like most lakes in this part of the state, it occupies a depression in the underlying limestone rather than a glacial basin or a dammed river valley, part of the sinkhole-lake country that covers much of central Florida. The lake covers about 314 acres with roughly three miles of shoreline, small enough to see across yet large enough to support a boat ramp and year-round fishing.
The surrounding land has shifted over the past few decades from ranch and citrus groves to the Lake Nona development, which grew up around a cluster of small lakes and added subdivisions, medical offices, and golf courses nearby. People who use Whippoorwill tend to fish for largemouth bass and panfish or paddle it in kayaks and canoes, since Florida's shallow, sandy-bottomed lakes like this one see more quiet water traffic than wake sports.
