About Lake Winterset
Lake Winterset sits in Polk County, Florida, within the cluster of interconnected lakes around Winter Haven. Like most lakes in this part of central Florida, the basin sits in limestone terrain shaped by sinkhole activity rather than glacial retreat, a formation process common across the state's ridge and lake district. The surrounding land was citrus country for much of the twentieth century, with groves running down to the shorelines before postwar subdivision replaced many of them with residential lots.
Winter Haven's lake district built its reputation on water skiing, anchored by Cypress Gardens, which opened nearby in 1936 and drew skiers and tourists to the chain of lakes for decades. Bass fishing remains a steady draw on the Polk County lakes generally, with tournament trails running through the area on weekends. Homes on Lake Winterset sit on a roughly 5-mile shoreline, with docks and boat lifts typical of central Florida's lake-front residential pattern.
