About Lochloosa Lake

Lochloosa Lake sits in a limestone basin in Alachua County, Florida, a few miles east of Gainesville. It is part of the karst landscape that shaped much of north-central Florida, where sinkholes and porous rock produced a chain of shallow lakes tied together by creeks and marsh. Cross Creek, a short waterway on the lake's western side, connects Lochloosa to neighboring Orange Lake. Author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings settled at Cross Creek in 1928 and wrote The Yearling and Cross Creek from the orange grove property between the two lakes.

The town of Hawthorne sits along the lake's shore, with fish camps and boat ramps built up around bass and speckled perch fishing. Lochloosa has long drawn anglers for largemouth bass and crappie, and its waters stay busy with johnboats and guide trips through the cooler months. The lake covers roughly 5,439 acres with about 14 miles of shoreline, shallow enough in stretches that cypress stands and grass beds line much of its edge, a pattern typical of the Ocklawaha River lakes to the south.

Why we cut this one
Lochloosa Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Lochloosa Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Lochloosa Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 9 ft, 19 ft, 28 ft, 38 ft, 47 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 57 ft. The lake covers about 8.6 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Lochloosa Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Lochloosa Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Lochloosa Lake.

Questions

Lochloosa Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Lochloosa Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Lochloosa Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
