About Pomona Lake
Pomona Lake sits in Osage County, Kansas, formed when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dammed 110 Mile Creek and completed the reservoir in 1964. The project was authorized for flood control on the Marais des Cygnes River basin, protecting farmland and towns downstream after decades of seasonal flooding. The lake covers roughly 3,375 acres and sits about 20 miles southwest of Lawrence and Topeka, drawing residents from both cities on weekends.
The surrounding shoreline is managed largely as public land, with Pomona State Park on the western side and additional Corps of Engineers and Kansas Wildlife and Parks access points ringing the rest. Anglers come for crappie, channel catfish, and white bass, and the lake has hosted regional bass tournaments. Sailors use it too — the open, unobstructed water and steady prevailing wind out of the south make it one of the more active small-craft sailing lakes in eastern Kansas.
