About Quivira Lake
Quivira Lake sits in Wyandotte County, Kansas, inside the Kansas City metropolitan area. The lake takes its name from Quivira, the province of gold that Francisco Vásquez de Coronado searched for across the Kansas plains in 1541 and never located. The surrounding community incorporated as its own small city, built entirely around the private lake and governed to manage it and the homes ringing its shore.
The lake is compact, its roughly three miles of shoreline lined mostly with houses rather than public access points, giving it the character of a residential lake more than a recreational destination. Families who live on it use it for fishing and quiet boating rather than heavy traffic. Its small size and enclosed setting inside a larger metro area make it more a neighborhood fixture than a regional attraction.
