About Enid Lake
Enid Lake sits behind a flood-control dam the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers built on the Yocona River, completed in 1947 as part of a chain of Yazoo Basin reservoirs constructed after repeated flooding along the Mississippi Delta. The dam and surrounding land are managed out of the Corps' Vicksburg District, with the lake holding back water that once ran unchecked toward Delta farmland downstream. Yalobusha and Panola counties border its shoreline, rural country of cotton and soybean fields interrupted by pine bluffs.
The lake built a reputation for crappie, drawing anglers from across the region for spring tournaments run out of its Corps-operated campgrounds and boat ramps. Towns like Oakland and Water Valley sit within a short drive, small communities that supply bait, gas, and lake-day groceries rather than resort trade. Its shoreline stays largely undeveloped by design, since the Corps holds the surrounding acreage for flood-storage capacity, so most of what borders the water is hardwood bottomland and public access points instead of private docks.
