About Abiquiu Lake
Abiquiu Lake sits on the Rio Chama in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, held back by Abiquiu Dam, completed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1963 for flood control and water storage. The reservoir backs up against red sandstone mesas near the village of Abiquiu, a few miles from Ghost Ranch, where Georgia O'Keeffe painted the surrounding cliffs and the flat-topped peak of Cerro Pedernal for decades.
The lake draws boaters, anglers, and campers up from Santa Fe and Espanola, with Corps-run campgrounds along its northern shore. Kokanee salmon and trout fishing brings people out through the fall, and the exposed red and white rock walls around the water are a regular stop for photographers working the same badlands O'Keeffe painted. Los Alamos lies within reach to the southeast, putting the lake inside the same high desert corridor as the national lab.
