About Lake Mead
Lake Mead formed behind Hoover Dam, completed in 1935 on the Colorado River southeast of Las Vegas, and remains the largest reservoir by water capacity in the United States, though two decades of drought have left it well below full pool. At full capacity it covers about 247 square miles across the Nevada-Arizona line, with Boulder City built to house the dam's workers and marinas at Lake Mead and Callville Bay serving the boaters and anglers who come out from Las Vegas. The white 'bathtub ring' on its rock walls now marks how far the water has fallen.

The lake covers about 241.7 square miles, and 469 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

Is it made from real depth data?
Yes. Lake Mead is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.
Can I add my own place on it?
Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.
