Florida in relief

The land itself, cut in six steps of birch from the lowlands to the high ground — the cities starred, the summit and rise on the title block. No counties, no roads: just the shape of Florida.

About Florida

Florida is a limestone platform barely above the water. The peninsula runs south between the Gulf and the Atlantic to the Keys, an arc of coral islands trailing off toward Key West, while the Panhandle stretches 200 miles west along the Gulf. Lake Okeechobee sits in the middle of the south end, spilling into the Everglades — a river of grass fifty miles wide moving inches an hour to Florida Bay. The St. Johns is one of the few American rivers that flows north. Sixty-seven counties, big in the interior and small along the built coasts.

Spain ceded Florida in 1821 and it entered on March 3, 1845 as the 27th state. Tallahassee became the capital in 1824 for a plain reason: it sat halfway between the two old Spanish capitals, St. Augustine and Pensacola, and riders from each could meet there. The board is worth hanging for its edges — the Overseas Highway running 113 miles of US-1 across the Keys on bridges, I-95 and I-75 down each coast, and the Cape Canaveral launch pads on the Atlantic side.
