Georgia in relief

The land itself, cut in six steps of birch from the lowlands to the high ground — the cities starred, the summit and rise on the title block. No counties, no roads: just the shape of Georgia.

About Georgia

Georgia's borders are a lesson in how lines get drawn: the Savannah and Chattooga rivers on the east, the Chattahoochee on part of the west, the 35th parallel across the top and the St. Marys River at the bottom. The Blue Ridge fills the northern counties, the fall line runs a diagonal through Columbus, Macon and Augusta where the Piedmont drops to the coastal plain, and below it the land flattens to the Okefenokee Swamp and the Golden Isles. The 159 counties — the second-most in the country — came from a rule that every farmer should reach his courthouse in a day.

Georgia ratified on January 2, 1788, fourth of the thirteen. Atlanta became the capital in 1868, the fifth city to hold the job, chosen because the railroads met there — the town began in 1837 as the end of a rail line and was called Terminus. That crossroads is still the story of the map: I-75, I-85 and I-20 all converge inside the Perimeter, I-16 runs down to Savannah, and the Appalachian Trail begins at Springer Mountain in the state's northern hills.
