Michigan in relief

The land itself, cut in six steps of birch from the lowlands to the high ground — the cities starred, the summit and rise on the title block. No counties, no roads: just the shape of Michigan.

About Michigan

No state is easier to recognize. The Lower Peninsula is the mitten, wrapped by Lake Michigan, Lake Huron and Lake Erie; the Upper Peninsula runs west along Lake Superior to the Porcupine Mountains and the Keweenaw copper country, and the Straits of Mackinac join them at a five-mile bridge opened in 1957. Michigan touches four of the five Great Lakes and has more freshwater shoreline than any other state. The interior is glacial: moraines, inland lakes by the thousand, and the sand dunes along the west shore. Eighty-three counties, gridded flat on the survey.

Michigan entered on January 26, 1837 as the 26th state, after the Toledo War — a border quarrel with Ohio that Michigan lost, giving up the Toledo Strip and taking the western Upper Peninsula as compensation, which turned out to hold iron and copper worth far more. Lansing became the capital in 1847, moved inland from Detroit and out of reach of the border. I-75 runs the whole length to the Soo, and US-2 and M-22 draw the shore.
