Mississippi in relief

The land itself, cut in six steps of birch from the lowlands to the high ground — the cities starred, the summit and rise on the title block. No counties, no roads: just the shape of Mississippi.

About Mississippi

Mississippi is bounded by its namesake river on the west, with every oxbow and cutoff drawn in, and by straight surveyed lines north and east except where the Tennessee River clips the corner. The Yazoo-Mississippi Delta in the northwest is flat black alluvial ground, some of the deepest topsoil in the country; a line of loess bluffs runs south from Memphis through Vicksburg and Natchez, and behind them the Piney Woods roll down to the Gulf and the barrier islands off Biloxi. Eighty-two counties, several of which have two county seats because of the river and the bluffs.

Mississippi entered on December 10, 1817 as the 20th state. Jackson was founded as the capital in 1821 on the Pearl River, sited by commissioners looking for a central spot and laid out on a checkerboard plan of alternating blocks and green squares attributed to Jefferson. The map carries the Natchez Trace Parkway, the old boatmen's road walking north from Natchez to Nashville, plus I-55 and I-20 crossing at Jackson and the coast highway running east from Bay St. Louis.
