About Eklutna Lake
Eklutna Lake sits in Chugach State Park north of Anchorage, fed by meltwater from the Eklutna Glacier at its head. The Eklutna River was first dammed in 1929, and the Bureau of Reclamation rebuilt and enlarged the dam in the 1950s to run the Eklutna Hydroelectric Project, which still supplies power to the region. The lake also serves as a drinking-water source for the Municipality of Anchorage, making it one of the few lakes in the state doing double duty for both electricity and tap water.
The lake lies near the village of Eklutna and the towns of Chugiak and Palmer, land long used by Dena'ina Athabascan people before hydroelectric development changed the valley. Today it draws hikers, mountain bikers, and paddlers on the roughly 12-mile Lakeside Trail along its north shore, while the south side stays open to all-terrain vehicles. Campers and boaters come out from Anchorage for weekend trips, and the glacier at the lake's far end remains visible from the water on a clear day.
