About Naknek Lake

Naknek Lake lies inside Katmai National Park and Preserve in southwest Alaska, a basin shaped by glacial retreat in a region also marked by the volcanic activity that produced the nearby Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. The lake spans roughly 144,660 acres, with an estimated 275 miles of shoreline spread across a series of connected arms and bays rather than one continuous open basin. Depth modeling puts its deepest point near 963 feet. Water drains west out of the lake through the Naknek River toward Bristol Bay, and the town of King Salmon sits near that outlet.

The lake sits within the Bristol Bay watershed, home to one of the world's largest sockeye salmon runs, and draws both commercial and sport fishermen each summer. Brooks Camp, on an arm of the lake near Brooks Falls, is known for concentrations of brown bears that gather to feed on migrating salmon, drawing visitors who arrive mostly by floatplane since no road connects the area to the outside world. King Salmon, the nearest town, serves as the regional air hub and supply point for fishing lodges and park visitors rather than as a year-round population center.

Why we cut this one
Naknek Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Naknek Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Naknek Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 161 ft, 321 ft, 482 ft, 642 ft, 803 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 963 ft. The lake covers about 237.2 square miles, and 5 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Naknek Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Naknek Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Naknek Lake.

Questions

Naknek Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Naknek Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Naknek Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
