About Tazlina Lake

Tazlina Lake sits in the Copper River basin of south-central Alaska, fed by the Tazlina Glacier at its northern end. Glacial meltwater carries suspended silt that gives the water a turquoise-gray cast. The lake drains south into the Tazlina River, which joins the Copper River near the community of Tazlina. It lies roughly fifteen miles west of Glennallen, reached from the Richardson and Glenn highways.

The surrounding country is Ahtna Athabascan homeland, and Copper River families have fished salmon runs on the connected waterways for generations. Gulkana, a few miles east, is home to a federally recognized Ahtna village. Local fishers use fish wheels and dip nets on the Copper and Tazlina rivers during summer salmon runs. Because of its remoteness and cold glacial water, Tazlina draws far less boat traffic than lakes closer to Anchorage; the people on it are more often anglers, hunters, and Copper River locals than vacationers.

Why we cut this one
Tazlina Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Tazlina Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Tazlina Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 185 ft, 370 ft, 555 ft, 740 ft, 925 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 1111 ft. The lake covers about 61.2 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Tazlina Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Tazlina Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Tazlina Lake.

Questions

Tazlina Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Tazlina Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Tazlina Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
