About Folsom Lake
Folsom Lake was created in 1955 when Folsom Dam closed on the American River in the Gold Country foothills northeast of Sacramento, part of the federal Central Valley Project. The lake covers about 11,000 acres at full pool with more than 75 miles of shoreline, and its water level swings widely with California's wet and dry years, sometimes exposing the ruins of the Gold Rush-era town of Mormon Island. Folsom Lake State Recreation Area is one of the most heavily used parks in the state system, a short drive from Sacramento for boating, cycling and swimming.
