About Laguna Lake
Laguna Lake sits on the Santa Rosa Plain in Sonoma County, California, part of a low floodplain that drains north toward the Russian River. Before ranchers and orchardists settled the area in the 1800s, the plain held seasonal wetlands used by Southern Pomo and Coast Miwok families for fishing and gathering. Winter rains still fill the basin each year, and the flat ground around it later made room for roads, farms, and orchards on what had been marsh.
The lake covers about 203 acres with roughly five miles of shoreline and a modeled depth near 44 feet. Santa Rosa, a few miles north, grew into Sonoma County's largest city and a center of the regional wine and apple trade, while the land closer to the lake stayed lower-density, a mix of small farms and residential streets. People walk the paths around the water, fish from the bank, and watch the waterfowl that gather there through the year.
