About Lake Berryessa
Lake Berryessa was formed in 1957 when Monticello Dam closed across Putah Creek in Napa County, flooding the town of Monticello and becoming California's second-largest reservoir behind Shasta. It covers about 20,000 acres over roughly 15 miles, ringed by oak-covered hills an hour from Napa's wine country. The dam's circular 'glory hole' spillway, one of the largest of its kind in the world, only overflows in the wettest years and has become a minor spectacle each time it does. Fishing, waterskiing and the resorts along the south shore are the lake's steady business.
