About Lake Skinner
Lake Skinner was formed in 1973 when the Metropolitan Water District completed Skinner Dam, an earthen embankment built to store water delivered by the Colorado River Aqueduct before it moves on to treatment plants serving Southern California. The reservoir sits in the hills of Riverside County between the towns of Winchester and Temecula, at the edge of the wine country that has grown up along Rancho California Road since the 1960s.
Because it functions as a drinking-water supply, swimming and body contact are prohibited, which has shaped the reservoir into a boating and fishing destination rather than a beach town. Riverside County operates a park and campground along its shore, and the lake has hosted bass fishing tournaments for striped bass and largemouth, drawing anglers from across the region on weekend mornings when the water is calm.

Yes. Lake Skinner is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.
