About Loon Lake

Loon Lake sits in the Crystal Basin Recreation Area of the Eldorado National Forest, at roughly 6,400 feet in the Sierra Nevada. The lake is a reservoir, formed when the Sacramento Municipal Utility District dammed Gerle Creek as part of the Upper American River hydroelectric project. Water levels rise and fall with the utility's power generation schedule, exposing granite shoreline by late summer. The access road, Wentworth Springs Road, is seasonal, closing with the first heavy snow and reopening in early summer once crews clear the route up from Riverton and Kyburz off Highway 50.

Afternoon winds funnel across the exposed granite basin with enough consistency that sailors and windsurfers treat Loon Lake as a regional destination, arriving from Sacramento and the Bay Area on summer weekends. The lake covers about 1,151 acres with roughly 9 miles of shoreline and reaches a maximum depth near 129 feet, deep for its footprint and cold even in July from Sierra snowmelt. Its western arm feeds trailheads into the Desolation Wilderness and the Rockbound Valley, drawing backpackers who camp at the lake before continuing on foot.

Why we cut this one
Loon Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

Loon Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a Loon Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 21 ft, 43 ft, 65 ft, 86 ft, 107 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 129 ft. The lake covers about 1.9 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A Loon Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on Loon Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your Loon Lake.

Questions

Loon Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of Loon Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. Loon Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
