About New Hogan Lake
New Hogan Lake sits behind New Hogan Dam on the Calaveras River in Calaveras County, California, near Valley Springs. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers finished the dam in 1963, built for flood control and irrigation storage downstream toward Stockton. It replaced an older, smaller Hogan Dam from 1931, whose reservoir was submerged when the new lake filled behind it.
The lake draws bass anglers and campers to Army Corps-managed shoreline, with boat ramps and campgrounds spread around its arms rather than a single town center. Valley Springs is the nearest community, a former Southern Pacific Railroad stop turned small foothill town. Winters bring bald eagles to the lake's edges, and the Corps runs seasonal viewing programs around their nesting activity.
