About Pacheco Lake
Pacheco Lake sits in the hills east of Pacheco Pass, the old travel corridor linking the Salinas Valley to the San Joaquin Valley, in San Benito County, California. The lake covers about 151 acres with roughly four miles of shoreline, and depth models put its deepest point near 61 feet. It takes its name from the pass, itself named for Francisco Pérez Pacheco, a Californio ranchero who held land grants in the area during the Mexican period.
The lake is privately held and mostly reached by guided or invitation-only trips, which keeps boat traffic light and has made it known among anglers for largemouth bass. Its setting is dry, oak-covered hill country typical of the Diablo Range foothills, a contrast to the flat cropland of the nearby Salinas Valley. Hollister and Gilroy are the closest towns, and Highway 152 over Pacheco Pass runs within a few miles of its shore.
