About Elevenmile Canyon Reservoir
Denver Water built Elevenmile Canyon Dam on the South Platte River in 1932, backing up a reservoir in South Park at roughly 8,600 feet elevation. The reservoir sits in Park County, near the small town of Lake George, Colorado, upstream of the canyon that gives it its name. Water released here feeds the South Platte downstream toward Denver's municipal supply. The surrounding terrain is open grassland and sagebrush basin ringed by the Pike National Forest, exposed to wind that sweeps across South Park with little to block it.
The reservoir is known among anglers for rainbow and brown trout, drawing fishermen from across the Front Range and Colorado Springs. Eleven Mile State Park manages the shoreline and boat ramps, and the open water attracts sailors and windsurfers who come specifically for steady afternoon gusts. Ice fishing draws a separate crowd once the surface locks up in winter. The mix of exposed, wind-scoured water and consistent Denver Water releases keeps the trout fishery active year-round, and the reservoir remains one of South Park's main recreation stops between Denver and the mountain towns further west.
