About Lake Maurepas
Lake Maurepas sits west of Lake Pontchartrain in the Pontchartrain Basin, linked to it by Pass Manchac and fed by the Amite, Blind, and Tickfaw rivers. The basin formed as the Mississippi River shifted its delta channels over thousands of years, leaving a shallow bowl of brackish and fresh water behind the barrier ridges near the Gulf. Because it sits farther inland than Pontchartrain, Maurepas holds less salt and supports different fish and plant life, a distinction long noted by people who worked the two lakes side by side.
Small communities line the shore — Springfield, Manchac, and Head of Island — where people have long run fish camps and hunting camps back into the surrounding swamp. Cypress and tupelo stands grow out of the shallows along the north and west sides, part of the cypress-tupelo swamp that surrounds much of the lake. Anglers work it for catfish, largemouth bass, and bream, and during dry years enough salt water pushes in through Pass Manchac that speckled trout and redfish show up too, a mix that keeps it useful for both freshwater and brackish-water fishing.
