About Lake Kittamaqundi

Lake Kittamaqundi is a 27-acre man-made lake that the Rouse Company built in 1966 as the centerpiece of Columbia, Maryland, the planned community James Rouse laid out on former farmland between Baltimore and Washington. It sits at the heart of Columbia's Town Center, next to the Mall in Columbia and Merriweather Post Pavilion, and doubles as stormwater management for the surrounding watershed. The lake takes its name from a 17th-century Piscataway village leader, Kittamaquund, though the site itself has no direct historical tie to him. A lakefront path, summer festivals and Fourth of July fireworks make it Columbia's civic gathering spot.

On the board

Why we cut this one
Lake Kittamaqundi is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
