About East Devils Lake

East Devils Lake sits within the larger Devils Lake basin in northeastern North Dakota, a closed drainage system carved by glacial meltwater at the end of the last ice age. Unlike most lakes in the region, it has no natural river outlet, so its level rises and falls almost entirely with precipitation and runoff across the surrounding Missouri Coteau. Water levels stayed relatively stable for most of the twentieth century, then began a sustained climb starting in 1993, submerging roads, farmland, and buildings along the lower shoreline through the following two decades.

The Spirit Lake Dakota have lived along the lake's southern shore for generations, and their reservation borders the water today. The city of Devils Lake, seat of Ramsey County, grew up on the north side as a rail and trade stop and now anchors a fishing economy built around walleye and yellow perch. Ice shanties cover the bay by winter, and summer brings tournament boats working the flooded timber and drowned fence lines left behind when the water rose. Grahams Island separates the main lake from its eastern arm.

Why we cut this one
East Devils Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

East Devils Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a East Devils Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 21 ft, 42 ft, 62 ft, 83 ft, 104 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 125 ft. The lake covers about 140.2 square miles. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A East Devils Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on East Devils Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your East Devils Lake.

Questions

East Devils Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of East Devils Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. East Devils Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
