About Lake Sakakawea
Lake Sakakawea was formed by Garrison Dam, completed on the Missouri River in central North Dakota in 1953, and is the third-largest man-made reservoir in the country by surface area at roughly 178 miles long. The lake and dam are named for Sacagawea, whose Hidatsa-Shoshone homeland near the Missouri lay along the route she guided Lewis and Clark through in 1805. The dam and reservoir flooded much of the Fort Berthold Reservation's best farmland, a loss the Three Affiliated Tribes still contend with, and today the lake is North Dakota's leading walleye fishery.
