About Neversink Reservoir
Neversink Reservoir sits in the Catskill Mountains of Sullivan County, New York, formed when the Neversink Dam was completed in 1953 as part of New York City's Delaware Aqueduct water supply system. The dam flooded the hamlet of Neversink and the surrounding river valley, displacing residents and submerging farmland and roads that had run along the Neversink River. The reservoir covers roughly 1,023 acres and stores water that flows south through the aqueduct network toward the city's downstate reservoirs.
The shoreline runs about 12 miles, mostly forested and undeveloped, since New York City's Department of Environmental Protection restricts access to protect the water supply. Fishing requires a DEP access permit, and the river below the dam is known among fly anglers for wild and stocked trout. Nearby hamlets such as Neversink and Grahamsville serve as gateways rather than lakefront towns, since most of the shore is closed to building. The basin follows the old river valley, giving the reservoir a long, narrow shape rather than a rounded one.
