About Otisco Lake
Otisco Lake sits at the eastern edge of New York's Finger Lakes chain, a long, narrow basin gouged by glacial ice sheets that retreated roughly 10,000 years ago. Unlike the chain's deeper members, Seneca and Cayuga, Otisco stayed shallow, with a modeled maximum depth of about 50 feet. The lake runs north to south for several miles across Onondaga County, with a shoreline stretching roughly 13 miles and a surface area near 2,162 acres.
The hamlets of Amber, Marietta, and Otisco ring the shoreline, small crossroads communities set among dairy farms and wooded hills south of Syracuse. Cottages line much of the lake's edge, many built for seasonal use by Syracuse-area families rather than year-round residence. The lake draws bass and panfish anglers and small boat traffic, with speed and use restrictions shaped by its role as a local water source and its narrow, wind-exposed basin.
