About Piseco Lake
Piseco Lake sits in the southern Adirondacks of Hamilton County, New York, in a natural basin carved by glacial retreat, with no dam holding it back. The hamlet of Piseco, on its northwest shore, is one of the older interior settlements in what became the Adirondack Park, established when the surrounding wilderness was still largely unmapped and travel in and out was slow. The year-round population around the lake remains small, and most of the shoreline is private camps rather than a commercial waterfront, with state forest preserve land filling in the gaps between them.
Piseco Lake is known among Adirondack anglers for lake trout, drawn to its cold, clear, relatively deep water; smallmouth bass and other coldwater species are also caught there. A state-owned grass airstrip, Piseco Lake Airport, runs along the lake's eastern shore and has long served as a base for New York's forest rangers on fire patrol, one of only a handful of lakes in the state with a public airfield beside it. Many of the camps ringing the shoreline have stayed in the same families for generations, passed down rather than sold, and the lake draws relatively little commercial traffic compared with larger Adirondack destinations like Lake George.
