About White Lake

White Lake sits in the town of Bethel, Sullivan County, New York, in the lower Catskills. The hamlet on its southeastern shore gave its name to the 1969 festival poster, which billed the event as "An Aquarian Exposition in White Lake, NY." The actual concert grounds were on Max Yasgur's dairy farm about three miles northwest, after organizers lost their permit in nearby Wallkill and relocated that July. Yasgur had built the farm into Sullivan County's largest milk producer through the 1950s and 60s.

Long before 1969, the lake was a summer draw for New York City vacationers, ringed by hotels and bungalow colonies typical of the Catskills' Borscht Belt resort era. That trade thinned out over the following decades as air travel opened cheaper destinations. Today the surrounding towns of Bethel and White Lake are quiet outside summer weekends, with Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, built on the former Yasgur property, drawing visitors each August around the festival's anniversary.

Why we cut this one
White Lake is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.

Depth chart

White Lake depth chart, in wood

This is a White Lake depth chart you can hang: 6 stacked layers of birch, each one a depth contour — 11 ft, 23 ft, 34 ft, 46 ft, 57 ft and deeper, down to the deepest hole at about 68 ft. The lake covers about 0.4 square miles, and 57 shore roads are engraved around it. The shape of the bottom is the real one from published soundings, so anglers recognise their drop-offs and points.

A White Lake map for the wall — or a gift

Most of these go to a cabin wall, a lake house entry, or a home office; a lot are gifts — the family that has been on White Lake for three generations, the retirement move, the first boat. The 12-inch is the desk-and-shelf size; the 24- and 30-inch boards read across a room. Add a line under the title and star your place on the shore, and it becomes the map of your White Lake.

Questions

White Lake map — the details

How big is the map?

Four sizes: 12, 17, 24 and 30 inches on the long side, from $149. Every size is cut from the same depth data of White Lake; the bigger boards carry more shoreline roads and place names.

Is it made from real depth data?

Yes. White Lake is cut layer by layer from published bathymetric soundings — each layer of birch is a depth contour, so the shape of the bottom is the real one, not decorative.

Can I add my own place on it?

Yes. At checkout you can add a line under the title (a family name, a cabin name, a year) and star the spot on the shore that matters to you.

How long does it take?

Made to order in Waterford, Pennsylvania and shipped in 7–10 days; shipping is free in the lower 48.

Can you make a lake that isn't listed?

Any lake in the United States — we hold depth data for 104,419 of them. Search for yours; if it isn't built yet we build it when you order.
