About Worden Pond

Worden Pond sits in South Kingstown, in the Great Swamp country of southern Rhode Island — the largest natural freshwater lake in the state, though barely nine feet deep anywhere on it. In 1675, during King Philip's War, Roger Williams used the pond as a meeting place to negotiate with Narragansett leaders, including Queen Quaiapen. It took its name afterward from Samuel Worden, who bought the surrounding land in 1695 as part of the Pettaquamscutt purchase. The shallow water keeps it a fishing and paddling pond rather than a boating one.

On the board
  • 6 depth layers, each step engraved with its depth in feet
  • Compass rose, title block with coordinates, max depth and area; keyhole hanger on the back
Why we cut this one
Worden Pond is one of the lakes people ask us for by name — the kind of shoreline where the house has a name and the dock has a history. This board is cut from the same depth grid the configurator uses for all 104,419 lakes, so the shape is the real one.
